MTV reveals Rock Band Network
Friday, July 17th, 2009
MTV and Harmonix will partner up to bring a substantial new feature to the Rock Band games. The Rock Band Network will allow bands and artists to upload their songs and tracks to the game, with the freedom to even train in-house employees to program their note changes, specifically tailored to their music. The artist will be given two options: they can either allow freelance programmers to implement their songs, or they can hire specialists or train their own employees to do the job for them.
The Rock Band Network is in closed beta at the moment, but is scheduled for open beta in August. It is planned for initial release on Xbox 360, with later release to PS3 and Wii platforms.

IPhone publishers being pressured by the Big Guys.
Thursday, July 16th, 2009
Several of the bigger publishers in the games industry are poised to release their wares on the iPhone, after witnessing its popularity as a gaming device and the successes of smaller developers and publishers. Some of the companies rumored or confirmed to be ready to release for the iPhone include Electronic Arts, Gameloft and Glu Mobile.
Analysts say that despite the seemingly equalizing user ranking system for iPhone app popularity (and thus downloads and revenue), bigger firms will have advantage due to marketing budgets that can be tapped to promote their games. Smaller firms are seeing their free or 99-cent downloads rise in popularity, but many of them are not profitable – yet. Their funding and angel investors could prove to give them a fighting chance against the bigger names in the gaming industry.

Best Buy Dabbling in Used Games
Wednesday, June 24th, 2009
Texas will be the test area for Best Buy’s foray into used video games. Stores in Dallas and Austin have already begun buying and selling used video games, allowing consumers more variety in choice. They have installed automated kiosks at several points in the stores for users to scan in video games and receive Best Buy gift cards for the value of their game if it checks out to be in working order. Some of these kiosks will also allow games and DVDs to be rented directly.
Best Buy is hoping that this strategy will boost sales not only through the buying and selling of used games, but also through consumer engagement with new titles. They are following the lead of GameStop and RadioShack, two companies which are prominent in the buying and selling of used electronics.
